How do I become a tattoo artist?

Different states have different requirements. Currently there are very few programs that offer a full apprenticeship where a license can be obtained. The traditional way of getting license require an artist to work for several years for free, cleaning and maintaining the shop with no formal instruction or training, and sometimes no license at the end.

Does Alchemy Tattoo Apprenticeship license it’s apprentices?

Yes. Upon completion of the coursework, students will apply for an apprenticeship for a tattoo license in the state of Missouri.

What is the average income of a tattoo artist?

That depends on how much the tattoo artist is willing to work. Many shops are being set up where space can be rented and artists are essentially their own boss, in contrast to a percentage split with the shop. This allows the artist to have income ranging anywhere from $35k per year to $100k+ depending on experience, clientele, and how high in demand you are as an artist.

Will I make money as an apprentice?

Yes, with Alchemy Tattoo Apprenticeship, during the 3rd phase of the apprenticeship the artist will start at 20% and end at making 50% at the end of the six months. 50% is an industry standard that licensed artists make at a percentage based shop. If tattooing the recommended number of hours per week (starting low and increasing gradually) the apprentice will average $100 per week to start and end at up to $600+ per week.

Will I be guaranteed a job after my apprenticeship?

The apprentice will be eligible to work at Alchemy Tattoo Collective and/or they will be helped with job placement. We work with shop owners in the area to find a good fit for our apprentices. A position is not guaranteed and will depend on successful completion of the program.

Will I get to tattoo on clients?

Yes, if you enroll in the 3rd course you will begin an official apprenticeship and tattoo on clients.

Can I learn to tattoo online?

There are a growing number of online tattoo education courses and content that have a lot of useful information, however, none of these programs offer a Missouri tattoo license, or a tattoo license for any state. Many of them simply prepare an artist to get into an apprenticeship.

To get a tattoo license, it is required to practice under the guidance of a licensed tattoo artist.

Can I transfer my license to another state?

Every state has their own license transfer process, but in general, licenses can usually be transferred without having to go through another apprenticeship. Check with the individual state requirements to find out for sure.
